Our story

Dear Reader,

From the earliest days of our journey, skateboarding has been at the heart of everything we do. To some people, a skateboard is simply a piece of wood with four wheels. But to us, it is much more than that. It is a language spoken without words, a bridge between different worlds, a source of hope for children who have very little, and a powerful reminder that every young person deserves the opportunity to dream.

Our journey has taught us that childhood should not be defined by poverty, that talent should not be limited by a family's income, and that a child's future should never be decided by the circumstances into which they are born. Every child deserves a chance to discover their abilities, build friendships, overcome challenges, and experience the joy of simply being a child.

This is the heart of The Skatepark Mission.

2016 — The Beginning

The Beginning of a Dream in Mukono, Uganda

In 2016, we built our first skatepark in Mukono, Uganda. At the time, we could not fully imagine the impact that one skatepark would have on the lives of young people in the surrounding community.

What began as a place to skate became something much greater. We began to understand how skateboarding could bring young people together, regardless of their backgrounds, financial circumstances, or personal struggles.

At a skatepark, a child does not need expensive clothes, a privileged background, or a wealthy family to belong. A skateboard does not ask where you come from. It gives you an opportunity to try, to fall, to stand up again, and to keep moving forward.

A shared passion can bring children together.

We saw how a simple activity could create friendships between children who might otherwise never have met. We saw young people learning patience, courage, discipline, and determination. We saw the beginnings of confidence in children who needed a reason to believe in themselves.

And we began to understand something important: sometimes, changing a child's life does not begin with changing the entire world. Sometimes, it begins by giving that child a place to belong.

The Mukono skatepark was more than our first construction project. It was the beginning of a mission that would continue to grow, reaching young people who deserved opportunities just as much as anyone else.

2019 — St. Charles

Discovering the Power of a Skateboard at St. Charles, Nsagi

In 2019, we built the St. Charles Skatepark in Nsagi, Kayunga, Uganda. This chapter of our journey brought us even closer to understanding the enormous power of skateboarding.

When we visited the community, we witnessed the importance of creating opportunities for young people. We saw the potential that existed in children who needed more spaces to express themselves, connect with others, and explore what they could become.

The St. Charles Skatepark became a place where differences could fade into the background and a shared passion could bring people together.

Think about a child who grows up believing that the world has very little to offer them. Imagine a young person who sees others enjoying opportunities they have never had, wondering whether their own dreams will ever become possible. Now imagine that child stepping onto a skateboard for the first time.

The first attempt may end in a fall. The next may bring another fall. But eventually, there may be a small moment of progress: a better balance, a longer ride, a new trick, or the courage to try again after failing.

That moment matters.

It teaches a lesson that extends far beyond skateboarding. Failure is not the end. Progress takes time. You do not have to be perfect to begin, and you do not have to give up simply because something is difficult.

Encouragement and support can make the first step easier.

At St. Charles, skateboarding represented the possibility of growth. It offered young people a shared purpose and a reason to support one another. Experienced skaters could encourage beginners. Children could learn from one another. Friendships could develop across differences that might otherwise separate people.

That is the power of a skateboard: it can turn a stranger into a friend, a setback into a lesson, and a small moment of courage into a lifelong source of confidence.

But skateparks are not permanent without care, resources, and support. The St. Charles Skatepark now represents an important part of our story that we want to rebuild and bring back to life. We want another generation of children to experience the joy, friendship, and opportunities that a skatepark can offer.

We believe the memories made there deserve a future.

2023 — Kalangaro

Unity and Opportunity at Kalangaro, Sseta

In 2023, we continued our journey by building the Kalangaro Skatepark in Sseta, Namuganga, Uganda.

By this stage, our understanding of skateboarding had grown beyond the construction of ramps and the creation of places to ride. We had come to see skateboarding as a way to bring communities together and create opportunities for young people from different walks of life.

A skatepark can welcome children who have different stories, different abilities, different dreams, and different challenges. Some arrive with experience. Others arrive without knowing how to stand on a skateboard. Some are confident, while others need encouragement before they are ready to try.

A skatepark can become a gathering place for a whole community.

Yet, once they share that space, something beautiful can happen.

They begin to learn together. They celebrate one another's progress. They encourage someone who has fallen. They discover that another person's success does not diminish their own, and that helping someone else can be just as rewarding as landing a trick themselves.

This is how skateboarding builds community.

It creates a space where children can be seen for their abilities and their potential, rather than judged by what they lack. It gives young people a shared activity through which they can develop friendships, learn responsibility, and find a sense of belonging.

And its impact can reach far beyond the skatepark.

A child who learns to keep trying after falling may carry that determination into school, family life, and future opportunities. A young person who learns to encourage others may grow into someone who supports their community. A group of children who discover that they can learn and progress together may begin to imagine a future in which they help one another succeed.

We cannot promise that a skateboard will solve every challenge a child faces. But we believe that access to positive spaces, supportive friendships, physical activity, and meaningful opportunities can make a real difference.

Kalangaro strengthened our belief that skateboarding is not just about individual achievement. It is also about collective progress.

When we build a skatepark, we are not simply creating a place for children to perform tricks. We are creating a place where friendships can grow, confidence can develop, and young people can discover that they have something valuable to contribute to the world.

Why we keep going

Why We Must Keep Going

Mukono in 2016. St. Charles in 2019. Kalangaro in 2023.

Each chapter has strengthened our commitment to the young people we serve. Each skatepark has been part of a bigger dream: to make skateboarding accessible to more children, especially those growing up in underserved communities where opportunities can be limited.

We know there are still children waiting for their chance.

There are children who have never stood on a skateboard. Children who have never had access to a safe place to practise. Children who may have talent but lack the equipment, support, or space to explore it. Children whose families face difficult choices every day and cannot afford to make skateboarding a priority.

We do not believe poverty should decide which children get to enjoy childhood or pursue their dreams.

A child's financial circumstances should not determine whether they can experience friendship, develop a skill, or become part of a community that believes in them.

That is why we want to build more free public skateparks. We want to reach more communities, welcome more children, and make sure that the opportunity to skate is not reserved for those who can afford expensive facilities or private lessons.

We want girls to feel welcome on skateboards. We want beginners to know that they belong. We want children from low-income families to have opportunities to learn and grow without being made to feel that they are less deserving than anyone else.

And we want to rebuild the St. Charles Skatepark, bringing new life to a place that holds an important part of our journey.

Our dream is bigger than concrete, ramps, and rails. Our dream is to create spaces where young people can develop confidence, form friendships, discover their potential, and see possibilities beyond the limitations they face today.

Become part of the story

You Can Become Part of This Story

Dear reader, we have come a long way, but there is still so much to do.

We cannot reach every child on our own. We need people who believe that every young person deserves an opportunity. We need people who understand that even a small contribution can become part of something meaningful when many people work together.

Perhaps you are a skateboarder who remembers the first time you landed a trick you had been practising for weeks. Perhaps you remember the friends you made at a skatepark, the people who encouraged you when you fell, or the feeling of belonging to something bigger than yourself.

Now imagine giving another child the chance to create those same memories.

Perhaps you have never skateboarded at all. That does not make your support any less valuable. You do not have to ride a skateboard to believe in a child's future. You only need to believe that young people deserve opportunities to grow, connect, and discover what they are capable of achieving.

Every contribution brings us closer to our mission. Every person who shares our story helps us reach someone new. Every act of support helps keep the possibility of a better future alive.

We are asking you to join us, not simply as a donor, but as a partner in creating opportunities for the next generation.

Help us rebuild St. Charles Skatepark. Help us reach more children in underserved communities. Help us create free public spaces where young people can learn, fall, rise, laugh, make friends, and dream without being limited by poverty.

One day, we hope to look back and know that we did not ignore the children who needed opportunities. We hope to know that we stood together and helped create places where young people could discover their strength and believe in their futures.

Because a skatepark can be the beginning of a friendship. A skateboard can be the beginning of a dream. And a community that chooses to invest in its children can help shape a stronger generation.

The Skatepark Mission is more than a journey to build skateparks. It is a commitment to building opportunities, strengthening communities, and giving young people a reason to believe in tomorrow.

Will you join us?

Together, we can rebuild St. Charles, reach more children, and keep the dream rolling.

With hope, determination, and gratitude,

The Skatepark Mission
